There are different kinds of intelligence. He has one kind in spades. But his emotional intelligence ... well.

I have a good friend who is a top notch therapist and I asked him the other day about the pathologies of BC. He had some real insights, but his most interesting comment was that this is a classic adult child of an alcoholic father who has never come to grips with that relationship; six years ago the therapist predicted pretty much what has happened. BC is caught in a web of pathologies over which he has no control, and which will eventually be fully self-destructive unless he seeks help.
