The Vancouver Sun reports in a lead front page story in its Saturday edition that the market slump has forced Vancouver Stock Exchange brokers to ease up on the high life. Reporter Dianne Rinehart says in the full-page article that some brokers simply live off their credit cards until the cycle ends, while the smart ones live off diversified investments. In the happy, pre-Bre-X days of 1996, VSE brokers raised $2.1-billion in new money. In the first six months of this year, they scraped together only $392-million from investors. The result is fear and loathing on Howe Street. One unidentified broker estimates the layoffs in this highly secretive industry could be as high as 150 in the past three months, not including Vantage Securities. Peter Brown, the head of Canaccord Capital, is extremely close-mouthed about the current slump but very verbose about what he claims is a turnaround just around the corner.
