Chip-gear makers lift tech shares

NEW YORK (CBS.MW) --ÿTechnology stocks rose Monday afternoon as optimism
about chip equipment makers offset concerns about overseas markets and
President Clinton's testimony.

Shares of some semiconductor equipment makers are rebounding as
investors regain confidence in the group's fundamentals, said Byron
Walker, a managing director at BT Alex Brown. "These companies have been
beaten down for the past three quarters, primarily due to overcapacity,"
Walker said.

Applied Materials (AMAT) rose 1 9/16, or 5 percent, to 32 11/16;
Novellus Systems Inc. (NVLS) was upÿ 2 5/8, or 7.2 percent, to 39ÿ and
Linear Technology Corp. (LLTC) rose 2 1/2 to 62 7/8, or about 4.1
percent.
