Altivec prototypes land at Apple.

via Macosrumors

>New prototype 400Mhz G3s with AltiVec support have
reportedly been built, and should have arrived at Apple by
press time. These will be used in Yosemite motherboards to
test new versions of QuickTime, QuickDraw, and
OpenTransport which will take advantage of the technology.

According to one source who has had the chance to see a
test of OS X code run on an AltiVec-enabled processor, by
late '99, the Macintosh should have graphics performance --
thanks to the combination of high-speed AGP graphics cards
and AltiVec's superior 128-bit processing capabilities -- ten to
fifteen times that of Windows at a significantly lower cost.
*What does this mean for the Mac? A very attractive platform
for gaming would be our first guess.....*<
