The Globe and Mail reports in its Friday, Oct. 9, 1998 edition that chairman,
president and CEO, Charles Childers of Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan expects
his firm to escape damage from the international currency turmoil. The Globe's
Allan Robinson write that Mr. Childers says governments will buy the fertilizers
needed to ensure their citizens get a good quantity of food at reasonable prices.
He says he's confident that rising world demand for food will carry the demand for
fertilizers with it. The supply of arable land is shrinking and there's a need to
increase yields as the demand for poultry and meat rises along with the growth of
the middle class, he says. Profit for the six months ended June 30 was
$152.1-million (U.S.) or $2.81 a share, compared with $153.3-million or $3.02 a
share a year earlier, when there were fewer shares. Its revenue was $1.2-billion,
compared with $1.1-billion. Mr. Childers says the current Asian problems have
had little effect on the company.
