The researcher at UCF is named William Silfvast. Here is a link to the IBM Patent Server for one of his recent patents, which is soft x-ray.
patents.ibm.com

Two other recent laser patents from the UCF are 5577091 and 5459771, if anybody wants to check them out.

Sifvast obtained an early patent on an ion laser while he was at Bell Labs in 1971. The patent number is 3585524.

Ian, I have to agree that the UCF press release is geared toward obtaining more funding $$$ for the research project. The technology is a long, long way from commercialization.

All: Fleckenstein to be a guest on Nightly Business Report on PBS tomorrow night (Tues). Should be interesting to see if he has any further comments on a small "light bulb" company called Cymer.
