INTC could have trouble in 1Q99 due to higher demand for less-profitable low-end
INTEL was reiterated "outperform" by analyst Michael A. Gumport
at Lehman Brothers Inc. Gumport said Intel should benefit during
the next four months from increased demand for back-to-school and
Christmas, but could have trouble in the first fiscal quarter next
year because of higher demand for less-profitable low-end chips
and increased competition.

Re: "Kripa, When your competitor determines your ASP and can stay profitable a tier or two above you the only way to prosper is for that competitor to make a major error or two. One was the celeron, which sold like ants at a picnic. The advanced celeron will work better but will bring back a socket and AMD can make a socket part, unless Intel tries to sweep some slot 1 patent coverage over it like that split transactional bus. But that yields only a small gain and AMD can decide to use the socket and not use the STB."

Wrong Bill. The P6 bus protocol is patented and even if it weren't it would take a major redesign for the K6x to work in an Intel socket. Maybe it would be a good idea for Intel to license the P6 bus to AMD, it would set them back a year.
