Penni,

My kids have been outdoors as long as they've been alive, but it's only now that I'm start to realize what I've wrought. We recently had our first real rain in many months (very dry year in Southeast Asia), and last Sunday we went to scout out a valley where I've been sure there would be kayak-passable white water. The river turned out to be perfect. Joey, my 8 year old, went straight in, dove down around the base of a 20 foot rock, dutifully checked depth, climbed to the top, and dove in. Meanwhile Jenny, who is 2 1/2, pointed at a tidy grade 3+ drop, and started jumping up and down shouting "kayak! kayak!".

Then the thought hit me: what are they going to be doing when they're teenagers? Something damned close to suicidal, or I miss my guess. I just hope I can keep them off the paragliders. I can live with rivers and rock climbs, having survived them, but flying... well, it's going to be interesting. Whatever happens, I guess I have nobody to blame but myself,

Steve
