Burgled golfer urges Mandela to act on crime
By Christopher Munnion in Johannesburg

THE South African golfer Ernie Els appealed to the Mandela government yesterday to curb "the sickening wave of crime which is engulfing and destroying our country".

Ernie Els: appeal
The world-ranking golfer made the plea after hearing that his home at George, on the southern Cape coast, had been ransacked for the second time this year and that four members of his neighbour's family had been murdered by an intruder. Els told the Johannesburg Sunday Times from Seattle, where he is competing in the US Professional Golfers' Association Championship, that the government had failed to take firm steps to halt crime and violence in South Africa.

He said: "Something has to be done to protect innocent people in all communities. What am I supposed to say to international journalists when they ask me about the crime in my country? I always try to be a good ambassador for South Africa, but nothing seems to be done about the problem. Our rights as human beings are being taken away from us."

Last week, just before he teed off, Els was told that his home had been ransacked by an armed man believed to be one who already had a warrant of arrest issued against him more than a year ago for violent crimes. The same man is being held for an attack on his neighbour's farm in which four people were killed and three injured by a man who hacked some of them with a panga, raped the women, injected one with poison and doused others with petrol and set them on fire before shooting them.

The incident came as South Africa's white farmers started withholding taxes in protest against the spate of attacks on farmsteads.

the huge world is continuing to remind me of the Kingston Trio song.."the whole world is rioting " (think those are the words)
these "soldiers" were civilians..
I was in an explosion once..it is definitely no fun..nor exciting ..just outright horrific(every explosion brings me back in time)
my close friend who was pregnant at time was in world trade building explosion..again no fun..
I am of the opinion that US just supports Israel because of US's interest in middle east oil..not Israeli citizens..
Israel appears to be an anomaly(sp)...it probably elects people based on survival needs rather than on greed, power etc..
the aim is survival.
I am also of the opinion that the worse type of terrorists are bigots..since they plant a lot more seeds...
I am not implying you are a bigot..
cheers
bobby
ps.. another example of human nature.. one has to break one's neck to search for news on the unimaginable flooding in china..but the dress is everywhere
ps.. if Yugoslavia, nations in Africa or Ireland had an important commodity(besides the most important people..wonder if things would be different?
