Sun Flooded With More Than 10,000 Requests in First Week of Free Solaris Licensing Program

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1998--

Demand is High for the Industry's Most Flexible Internet, Java

and Enterprise Development Platform

During the first week of Sun Microsystems' Free Solaris(TM) Program, the company received more than 10,000 requests for licenses for its industry-leading Internet, Java(TM) and enterprise development platform.

Through the Sun(SM) Developer Connection(SM) program, developers, members of the academic community and Solaris enthusiasts worldwide can receive a license for the latest version of the Solaris operating environment for non-commercial use on Intel-based PCs or SPARC(TM) workstations. Users pay for the cost of media, shipping and handling. The company also announced it has enrolled 18,000 new members in the Sun(SM) Developer Connection(SM) since the Free Solaris Program began.

"The market is shifting toward the Solaris operating environment. The 10,000 requests demonstrate that developers, educators, students, researchers and enthusiasts want a faster, more flexible development environment," said John McFarlane, president Solaris Software, Sun Microsystems. "Now they'll be able to experience a high quality operating environment that reduces application development time and delivers greater flexibility through broad, direct access to operating system capabilities."

For the cost of media, shipping and handling, Sun will provide a free license to its Solaris(TM) operating environment when used for non-commercial use. Participants may develop and test applications, but in order to deploy them for commercial use, developers must upgrade their software to a commercial license.

Developers can order their copy of the Solaris operating environment at sun.com, while students, educators and researchers should access sun.com to place an order. Installation support is available through the Free Solaris Program by calling: 1-800-786-7638, prompt 4.
