Gemstone Systems, Inc. Files For Initial Public Offering

Beaverton, OR -- July 23, 1998 - GemStone Systems, Inc. announced today that it has filed a Registration Statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission for the proposed initial public offering of 2,500,000 shares of Common Stock of the Company. Of the Shares being offered, 500,000 are being sold by a corporate stockholder. GemStone intends to use the proceeds of the offering primarily for research and product development and for expansion of general sales and customer support activities.

GemStone intends to apply for listing of the Common Stock on the Nasdaq National Market System. The offering will be managed by SG Cowen Securities Corporation, Piper Jaffray Inc. and Volpe Brown Whelan & Company as representatives of the Underwriters.

GemStone designs, develops, markets and supports enterprise application software platforms that support the development, deployment and management of distributed, business-critical core competency applications in heterogeneous environments. The company's GemStone/J product is an application server for a new generation of enterprise server-based applications written in Java.

A Registration Statement relating to these securities has been filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission but has not yet become effective. These securities may not be sold nor any offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the Registration Statement becomes effective. This announcement shall not constitute an offer to sell or the solicitation of an offer to buy, nor will there be any sale of these securities in any state in which such an offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful prior to registration or qualification under the securities laws of any such state. When available, a prospectus meeting the requirements of Section 10 of the Securities Act of 1933 may be obtained by contacting the Prospectus Department at: SG Cowen Securities Corporation, One Financial Square, New York, NY 10005, (212) 495-6616; Piper Jaffray Inc. 222 South Ninth Street, Minneapolis, MN 55402, telephone (612) 342-6000; or Volpe Brown Whelan & Company, One Maritime Plaza, San Francisco, California 94111, telephone (415) 274-7900.

Although GemStone stepped back from developing a genuine ODBMS, their public exposure will give us more data to crunch, increasing the overall visibility of OO-technologies... I think GemStone is making about $30M in annual revenues.

Here's an interesting article on Andromedia:
sfgate.com

Excerpt:
The minimum price for ARIA is $10,000 and can range up over $100,000, depending on the size and complexity of the installation.

While that might seem like a lot of money, it's not an unreasonable investment for the managers of large Web sites, which can cost as much as $10 million per year.

The big unknown is how many companies are willing to pay such sums to refine their interactions with Web visitors.

"The real question for Andromedia is we don't know if the market is huge or if it's an extremely narrow niche market," said Aberdeen Group analyst Stevens.

Well... I guess that Andromedia's 130% revenue growth from 98Q1 to 98Q2 properly answers Mr Stevens' worries...
Now the $100,000 question is how ODIS' license stream fits into the ARIA business model: I hope it's not a flat fee agreement!
