Susan Watts: Whispers have been known to have
significant effects on market prices. A recent
example is Dell. Analyst forecasts were $.42; the
whisper was $.45
?. The stock price went up on the
whisper. Actual earnings came in at $.44, and the
stock price fell. Trading on whispers was blamed.

Pat:

Do you have the weighted average of our last quarter's estimates?
Thanks.

Paul

You have my vote.

'Morning Pat:

Where in the world did you get such a fool idea that somebody is against what you are doing with respect to the earning estimates? I don't know about others but for what it is worth you have my support and I am quite appreciative of what you are doing and I am sure the majority are. I believe it is of immense value to me in two fronts,one-it is a lot of fun and two- it gives me an idea what other investors are thinking, granted some estimates are worth more than the others.

As for whisper numbers I think it is a lot of 'garbage' (it is sort of like changing the rules in the middle of a game) and any influence it has on the stock is short lived at best and has no bearing on the long term performance of the stock.Regarding the importance of the estimates on SI, I recall from last quarter that some of 'popular press' mentioned the estimates that we come up with here on SI that of course doesn't mean the 'whisper gurus' are going by SI numbers,it however means that we are being watched but any influence SI has is probably superficial and not of any serious consequence.

Once again much obliged for your time and effort in this endeavor.

Whether or not the "real" whisper numbers come from this thread I do remember the enthusiasts on the Motley Fool forums being blamed for the huge loss in value of IOM. Sure, they're losing money now so there are good reasons for a depressed stock, but the over exuberance of the fans did seem to have an influence whereby the earnings not hitting the numbers touted by the forum numbers a couple of years ago led to the first big drop. I'm not sure of the dates and numbers but I think this will be familiar to the regulars here. It may have been the real whisper numbers that were not met, but I seem to remember it was the actual forum members that were blamed, maybe unfairly.
