Mr. A, very thoughtful post on I*: thank you. Strangely, I don't wish them ill either. I think their engineering reach on this one is just fantastic at the technical level--I'm just glad they're not doing it with my money. Too much dough to recover as you say, plus the complexity will mean 'kinks' for some time to come.
You're absolutely right about the experience of that cyber-cafe doing gangbuster business in the middle of nowheresville. My daughter just finished up a year in Spain at the University of Seville. The kids were alotted less than 30 minutes per WEEK to get on the net. We could send her e-mail without limit, but she only had 1/2 hour to respond to us and all her buddies. All the Americans were in total shock of course. Some bright guys opened up a cyber-cafe not too far from campus. You can finish the rest of the story--instantly packed with everybody and their brother. The technology was not exactly cutting edge [14.4kbs]but at least they were on. The demand for communications/bandwidth is just insane. G* will blow the skeptics away: people just love to jabber with their buddies, plain and simple, anywhere, anytime. Best, Mike Doyle
