AOL selects Cisco routers to speed Internet access

Reuters, Tuesday, August 18, 1998 at 11:40

SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug 18 (Reuters) - America Online Inc.,
the leading online service, chose Cisco Systems Inc. to supply
high-volume network equipment in a bid to speed its
subscribers' access to the Internet, the companies said on
Tuesday.
They said AOL will use Cisco 12000 Series gigabit switch
routers that will increase both the speed and volume of AOL's
Internet backbone, a data pipe that connects subscribers to
AOL's online service directly to the Internet.
A spokesman at Cisco, the world's leading provider of
Internet equipment, said the deal was one of the largest to
date for its gigabit switch router, a high-volume piece of
network equipment used in the backbone of AOL's data network to
switch billions of bits of data per second.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
"With the Cisco 12000 gigabit switch router, we found an
excellent solution to position ourselves for continued growth,"
Joe Barrett, AOL's vice president of Internet Operations, said
in a prepared statement.
"AOL is currently supporting more than 730,000 simultaneous
users, more than 18,800 Web hits per second, and continues to
experience explosive growth," Barrett said.
The result will be faster Internet access and improved
response times for customers of AOL's online service seeking to
connect to the Internet, an AOL spokeswoman said.
By boosting the capacity of this direct pipeline to the
Web, AOL eliminates the need to connect through multiple
Internet exchanges, which slows the time it takes subscribers
to link up to the Internet, she said.
Previously announced customers for Cisco's gigabit switch
routers include Frontier Corp.'s GlobalCenter unit, Qwest
Communications International Inc. and Netscape Communications
Corp.
Eventually, the Cisco gigabit routers could help enable AOL
to offer so-called quality of service features for which
customers would pay extra in order to guarantee immediate
delivery of high-priority communications.
Such features are required in order for voice or video
traffic to be delivered without interruption over the Internet
and not become bogged down by lower-priority text
communications traffic.
America Online stock gained $3.06 to $107.50 in early
trading on the New York Stock Exchange. Cisco stock was up
$1.375 to $99.50 on the Nasdaq exchange.
