Box Hill Systems Corp. Unveils Enhanced Version of Its Fibre Box

Advanced 'SAN Spanning' Software Provides Improved Fault-tolerance and Increased Performance

NEW YORK, Aug. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Box Hill Systems Corp. (NYSE: BXH - news), a leading independent provider of high-performance storage and Storage Area Network (SAN) solutions, has unveiled the newest version of its Fibre Channel RAID storage system, the Fibre Box(R). This updated version of the Fibre Box(R) implements advanced
technology called 'SAN Spanning.' SAN Spanning, developed by Box Hill for the Fibre Box(R), allows data to be distributed among multiple SANs, empowering the system with dramatically increased fault-tolerance and enhanced bandwidth. These benefits are essential for information management in many of Box Hill's market segments, including ERP, online transaction processing (OLTP), multimedia and broadcasting.

On a Fibre Channel host system without SAN Spanning, data is at risk. If the host bus adapter (HBA) or a SAN component fails, the entire system fails. With SAN Spanning, fault-tolerance is virtually ensured by the ability to add multiple HBAs and SAN hardware. Servers can mirror data across multiple SANs transparently to the application and if a SAN to a server port fails, the data on that SAN is easily recovered from one of the other SANs without having to bring the system down.

A significant performance boost is also attainable with the added bandwidth of multiple 100 MB/s SAN connections. SAN Spanning allows storage systems to increase bandwidth and eliminate data transfer bottlenecks by spreading the load of data among several SANs. Each SAN has a fixed bandwidth of 100 MB/s but SAN Spanning allows for higher bandwidths that vary depending on the number of HBAs that are added.

Philip Black, CEO, stated, ''We are extremely excited about the new SAN Spanning capabilities of the Fibre Box(R). Box Hill is the only storage vendor that has complete Fibre to Fibre RAID storage systems employing SAN Spanning features for NT. This new feature clearly establishes Box Hill as a leader in both SAN technology and Fibre to Fibre RAID storage systems for NT.''
