somehow the White Sox were allowed to blow up a bunch of disco records as a promotion.

Actually it was the famous "Disco Demolition Nite" which featured free beer, a [scheduled] twi-night double header, and between games, patrons' disco records they brought to the stadium would be blown up in center field. If you haven't seen films of the between games blast, it really was quite powerful, and incited the free beer-laden fans to riot onto the field, cancelling the second game, and I believe causing one of the last forfeits in major league baseball.

Sure beats free Beanie Baby Nite.
