*OT* A story.........

So, I'm golfing with a friend of mine. This friend has had an unfortunately typical Gen-X life. Screwed up family, mom twice divorced, basically general chaos & dysfunctionality throughout his life.

We start talking about the markets and I was basically telling him about how to go about investing your money in general. Then he says, "You know what, I only own 1 stock and that's because my grandfather bought me 10 shares a year until I was 18. So I had about 180 shares in a safe deposit box." He states that at the time the 2 names on the account were his and his mother's. Now this would for most people be a good thing. But his mother has had a history of financial difficulties and alcoholism, and their relationship has basically dissolved at this point. And that he wouldn't put it past her to sell it. So I ask him the big question, "What stock did your grampa buy you?"

"Disney" he replies.

At this point I fall off the chair.

"Joe," (named changed to protect the innocent) "do you still have this account?" "I think so, but I really haven't paid any attention to it. I figured I would just leave it alone until I got married so that I would have a decent downpayment on a house or something." he states naively.

At this point I tell him to go home, calmly call his mother, tell her he's organizing his finances and he would like these past statements regarding this account.

I then went home, got a stock split history from 1967-1983 and a current price.

My calculations are these (approx). He should have:

17,500 @ $32.35 = $566,125.00

I pick up the phone. "Joe." "Oh, hi John." "Joe, you should own about $570,000 worth of Disney." (silence) "WHAT???!!"
"Yes, if what you have told me is factual, and still remains unsold, this is what you now own."

"I'll call you back, John."

I still haven't heard back from him yet.
