Micron Is Upbeat, Based on PC Prospects <Picture>

By ANTHONY EFFINGER
c.1997 Bloomberg News

... SAN FRANCISCO - Micron Technology Inc. said Wednesday that several computer makers have told the company they expect strong personal computer sales in the fourth quarter, which may spur demand for Micron's memory chips.

''We've seen this just in the last two days,'' said company spokesman Kipp Bedard, who made the comments at the Robertson, Stephens & Co. semiconductor conference in San Francisco.

The comments come after worldwide PC shipments rose 15 percent in the second-quarter, buoyed by a stronger-than-expected performance in the U.S., according to market research firm International Data Corp. The fourth quarter is usually one of the PC industry's strongest, fueled by holiday shopping preceded by a slew of new products typically introduced in the third quarter.

It's the first time in about eight months that PC makers have sounded so optimistic, Bedard said. As a result, he said he expects memory chip demand to strengthen in September and October. Micron Technology, along with Texas Instruments Inc., are the two biggest U.S. makers of PC memory chips.

......... Separately, Bedard said Micron will have revenue about $50 million from its radio frequency identification chip business in fiscal 1998 and that the business will be profitable in the second half of that year.

The chips, which transmit data by radio waves, are being tested at airports for identifying baggage and in cars and gas stations, which allow motorists to begin the process of paying for gas before pulling up to the pump.

''The applications keep coming out of the woodwork,'' Bedard said.

I guess all the applications just crawled back into the woodwork -bg-
