Dear Mark;

The words of God are to be taken as he meant them. If we take the easy way and do not look into the history, the original language, the context or the rest of the Bible we will err in our interpretation. IMHO you try to remove God from the process. Yeshua promised that he would send the Ruach Ha Kodesh (the Holy Spirit) to teach us. Jhn 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, [even] the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

I would suggest that a reading of scripture will give anyone enough information to understand God's love and plan of redemption. If you want to understand the fine points I believe that God has given us a mind and the proper resources to dig out the truth. I do not think you should be so casual in your use of scripture if you see no value in it at all. God has taken great pains to protect his Word and he has presented it in such a way as to communicate what is needed. None of it will be lost until all has been accomplished. Yeshua himself said.

Mat 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

When you were growing up were you exposed to God's word in Temple? Do you feel it is at all important to understand your culture and heritage? You were born into a heritage that is beautiful and has blessed the world. I have been spending time trying to understand it better. If you could decide in your heart that you want to understand God's Word he will speak clearly to you. However, you must believe and understand that He will be with you as part of that journey. You cannot remove God from the knowledge and understanding of his Word because he is the Word.

Jhn 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

In Yeshua's love for you - DLL

A good day to you Mark,

<< ...if we have to try and determine what he is saying, then it is open to interpretation. How can we take that literally, when so many will interpret differently? >>

II Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts.
20 Knowing this first, THAT NO PROPHECY OF THE SCRIPTURE IS OF ANY PRIVATE INTERPRETATION.

Mark, the above indicates to me that, as I think you are saying, the scriptures have one meaning, not several dependant upon who is reading them. It is important as has been discussed to search the scriptures, studying them prayerfuly and to request that God provide us with wisdom as we do so.
James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Numerous times while studying scripture, a passage that was difficult for me to understand suddenly becomes clear. I believe by the Holy Spirits doing and in His timing He allows this to happen. God does speak to us through His word.
In the most literal sense of the word I see the crux of the matter boils down to one central theme in the bible. Salvation through Christ. The Old Testament fortold His coming, the New Testament depicts that fulfilment and promises His return. Everything revolves around this issue.
As people try to reason around the scriptures I see many trying to get away from that theme and introduce their "private interpretation" adjusting Gods word to fit there life style. Thus comes that Burger King religion of "have it your way." If Gods word doesn't support me lets just change it or delete it. i.e. God didn't really mean you can only be saved through faith in Jesus He must have meant something else when He said that.
You are probably repeating yourself but could you for my benefit tell how you view Jesus in the big picture? Or provide a link where you already stated that.
God bless,
John

Mark,

It is true that parts of the Bible (especially those pertaining to future events) are open to interpretation or misinterpretation. However, the main idea the Bible HAS TO get accross is how we are reconciled to God to dwell with Him. That part of Scripture is NOT open to interpretation, it is straight forward and to the point.
