Women thirst for justice

TRIBAL women in the eastern Indian state of Orissa have launched
a temperance movement to "cleanse" their drunken menfolk by
chaining them to a post and publicly thrashing them.

Every evening, scores of men from several villages near the state
capital, Bhubaneshwar, are "tried" at the local community centre by
their wives, declared guilty and, one by one, tied to a pole in the
village square and beaten. Reports suggest that few wanted the
treatment repeated and that the campaign is succeeding. Rahul
