It is very simple. It is called hedging your position. You enter a position both long and short at the same price. If yu think the price will drop you just sell the long position since an uptick doesn't matter. After you think the short term down move has ended you cover your short position. Then you reestablish your hedge once the stock is not moving. Vivus is not a trading stock now. Looks like there are no buyers nor sellers--just churning between the institutional spread of 5 and 5 1/4. I think the shorts will try hard to close us below 5 today since closing at an all time low in a strong market will be psychologically damaging. This is something the shorts have always done very well.
