DVD news

Now, what good is a Dolby Digital receiver if you don't have a source? Well, Kenwood has entered the DVD ranks with a standalone unit, having previously had a player as part of the Series 21 rack system. The new second-generation machine, due September, is the DVD-S700 and it's DTS compatible with 24-bit audio and 10-bit video DACs. No big news there.

What was interesting was the response to the dreaded Divx format. A Kenwood exec was very blunt when queried by E/Town: "Circuit City is our biggest customer. We don't have any announcements right now but you figure it out." That strongly implies Kenwood will have a Divx-format DVD player in 1999.
