iMAC & DELL

RE: "You are mising the point! I'm critical of DELL missing the $1,000 PC market, which is the only fast growing sector, of which iMAC's success is an obvious illustration."

Sorry. I do see your point. It is well taken with respect to $1,000 machines.

Hal

PS:Actually, iMac has been criticized for the same reasons. It sells for $1,299. It is not winning any converts away from the Wintel clones. Virtually all buyers are Mac oriented or first time computer users. Those schools and businesses currently set to buy the iMacs are predominantly Mac already. In fact, the Mac platform has nothing to offer the $1,000 budget oriented crowd. iMac is as low as they go because Mac is basically an elegant high end package solution presented as an alternative to the standard Wintel clone platform. What we are seeing is the result of a lot of pent up demand in a noncompeting market.

Also the iMac has a fast chip, a big hard drive, lots of memory, an expensive case, and a ton of advertising. Its a great publicity stunt but Apple will only break even on this one. I even expect it to sap higher end sales.

However, the iMAC does sell for about $300 less than the next cheapest Mac solution, so a small difference in price can cause a quite a stir. And it is this fact that tends to support your point. HR

Buy Dell stock first then you will be able to buy the top of line PC. Price of PC will be insignificant. Think about increasing your revenue vs cutting your cost.
