Altair to Pursue Opportunities for Jig in Worldwide Tin Industry CODY, Wyo., Aug. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Altair International Inc. (Nasdaq: ALTIF - news) today announced completion of a study of business opportunities for the Altair Jig in the worldwide tin industry. The study, done for Altair by SRI Consulting (SRIC) of Menlo Park, California, assessed global tin demand and compiled a list of primary tin producers. In addition, SRIC contacted the primary tin producers throughout the world and compiled a selective list of those with serious interest in the Altair technology. Based on SRIC's contacts, Altair has arranged for testing of tin ore from the world's largest tin producer, which is based in Brazil. A second test of tin ore, from Brazil's third largest tin producer, has also been arranged. Both tests will be done this fall at the Altair test facility in Reno, Nevada. ''The results of this study open another exciting new market for the Altair Jig'', said Dr. William Long, the president of Altair. ''We are actively pursuing these market opportunities.'' According to the SRIC report, the prospects for use of the Altair Jig by tin miners is quite attractive despite demand for global refined tin being stagnant for several decades. ''Even though tin as a base metal has suffered market losses in various alloy applications, and historical demand has remained relatively stagnant at some 200,000 metric tons per year, the primary sector (mining) has continued to show moderate growth. More important for Altair, however, is that competition among producers in a slow-growing market has exacerbated the need for mine producers to be cost effective. The ability to recover additional tin values from either millheads or tailings can make the difference between profits and losses. In this regard, the prospects for the Altair Centrifugal Jig are quite attractive because of its very low operating costs (typical of gravity-type concentrators), its high throughput, and especially its ability to selectively recover ultrafine heavy minerals,'' according to the SRIC report. SRI Consulting, a wholly owned subsidiary of Silicon Valley-based SRI International, works with companies worldwide to identify market opportunities and develop strategies for competing in today's technology-driven market place.
