Well generally, the complete obliteration of the consumer electronics industry in the US by Japan Inc (during the 80s) was an example of a real lack of understanding of the global mkts it appears. It sure looks like the Japanese used the currency situation at that time to destroy that industry doesnt it? In fact Mr. Lester Thurow also wrote about this very topic and his conclusion was that the people that worked for Reagan (dont remember who) didnt know what was going on. The other case of this was in machine tools. We lost our machine tools industry to the japanese.

I know there is an entire free mkt argument here - but you cant let a currency fluctuation of one 8 year period in time obliterate your core industries.

As I remember it, the liberals cried for seven years that Reagan did not know what was going on. Then when the Contra affair came along and he said that he didn't know anything about it, they screamed, "He's lying, he's lying". :0)
