Stephen : I see you know a few things about SAf.

A 300 gram rumpsteak at a good steakhouse costs under $7 (R40). At an "upmarket" supermarket, rump costs around R30 per kilo.

They charge anything for wine these days because the best wines are exported to Britain. Roodeberg would cost hundreds of rands, if you could get it. Even a bottle of plonk, at a local restaurant, could cost R50.

As an aside, the wine farmers here have made an untold fortune in the "new" South Africa. It is a peculiar paradox that these folks, who were among the biggest beneficiaries under the previous regime, have had an fantastic windfall under the ANC and are probably the biggest beneficiaries now, too. Sanctions have been removed and so their wine can be sold anywhere and at a price virtually equivalent to French or Australian wine. A local wine can sell for 20 pounds sterling in the UK. This translates to over R200 for a bottle which formerly would fetch R10 in a SAf bottle-store. Also the demand has been virtually insatiable apparently because of the "newness" of SAf wine on foreign markets. The only crop which would give them a better return is marijuana!
