Clinton seeks to repair family ties on vacation

By Arshad Mohammed

EDGARTOWN, Mass., Aug 18 (Reuters) - President Bill Clinton began a family vacation on Tuesday, seeking to repair relations with
his wife and daughter after his admission that he had had a sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

Clinton, his wife, Hillary, and their daughter, Chelsea, emerged from Air Force One with smiles on their faces, but a top aide said they
were still coping with the president's announcement on Monday that he had ''misled'' the country and his wife about his trysts with the former White House intern.

''This is a family that's got some healing to do,'' White House spokesman Mike McCurry said shortly after the Clintons flew to the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard on a warm, blustery afternoon.

''The president feels the most important thing he can do now is ... spend time with his family and do that in the privacy that he has requested so that he can do some repair within his family,'' the spokesman added.

Clinton reversed months of denials on Monday by admitting to his relationship with Lewinsky in testimony before the grand jury investigating the sex-and-perjury scandal and then in a dramatic televised address to the nation.

The Clintons, accompanied by their dog, Buddy, planned to spend their first day of vacation in seclusion, driving straight from the airport to the waterfront home they have borrowed for two weeks from Boston developer Richard Friedman.>>
