Steve, thanks on your take on the Reagan years. I have managed to forget how reagan's America looked to the other half of the planet. As a USA resident, all I saw was the prosperity (incidental? a direct effect?) and comparative social stability after the Seventies.
About Communism and ignorance - I'd argue that another key ingredient is disarming the populace. There's been an argument hereabouts lately that USA gun rights are a atavistic obstruction to building a civilized society. I don't support this idea. Reagan was my buddy much more than Slick because he was more or less pro-gun. Slick campaigned as a pro-gun Democrat (remember famous hunting photo ops) but shed that like water off a duck's back once he was elected.
