Ian, you got your facts a little bit screwed up -

1) Firewire and Mpeg -4 are international standards. That means the specifications for the standard are made up by groups from companies and universities interested in making the technology feasible. Usually some companies have more input to specific parts of the standard than others, but it is usually considered a joint effort, allowing all other companies to use any patents, or IP for a reasonable fee. Having been involved in the MPEG and MPEG-2 standards, I can tell you that this is how it works.

2) The compression code you talked about was developed by Intel. I was one of the 30 people from Sarnoff labs that Intel hired to develop such technology. In 1988, we formed the Intel DVI technology division in Princeton NJ. This is where we developed the silicon and algorithms for what is now the Indeo(TM) line of products. The development has since relocated to Oregon.

As one of the developers and holder of several patents for this technology, I suggest you fact check before you post erroneous information which downplays peoples/companies roles in technology development.

IanBruce - Re: " and the bi-polar technology which serves as the core of the Merced isn't even owned by Intel (nor have they sought permission to use it). "

What is this DRIVEL?

Intel isn't using Bipolar technology in the Merced - it's a CMOS process!

That comment is about the dumbest thing I've seen on this thread in weeks.
