More from the Asia forum. A reply to a question about how currencies are valued and which concludes HK will have to lift the peg. Any input from the experts here?

Chip, Tsukushi (News 23 anchor man) had an interesting comparison on his nightly essay at the end of the program. If you are familiar with the program, you will probably already know that he is one of the most respected and most knowledgeable journalist around, with an indepth grasp of Japanese and American politics and life styles at all levels.

He usually concludes the News 23 program with a short speech reflecting on the events at hands and raising questions.

Yesterday, he was comparing the very scary inundations China is dealing with this year with the same danger facing Japanese society and economy. The image could not have been stronger... He reflected on the daily stream of bad news, scandals and other appalling revelations all assaulting the fabric of society and how what people thought protected them (the levy) could give way at any minute and at any point while the government was frantically trying to work out temporary patches...

Does not bode well...

PS incidentally, a series that started running with the new year was entitled: "collapse or destroy" (Tsubureru or tsubusu) Meaning the system was either going to collapse or parts of it had to be destroyed before the cancer spread...
