As I recall, the decision to use the 8088 was based on the 8088 using 8 bits externally and not requiring the development of a 16 bit motherboard.

This was the reason the 8088 was picked over the 8086, which was 16-bit both internally and externally. Whether the availability of the 8-bit external version was a factor in the selection of the x86 architecture I don't know.
