Lucent does not have the time. Ascends (rather Cascade's) products are proven, installed and top of the line for a while now. Cisco, whose forte is data networking, could not top Cascade so I find such claims from Lucent (whose expertise has been voice switching) an attempt to try to keep the Ascend stock low so they dont have to shell out more money.
I wish I could show you recent analyst reports on Ascend following the their presentation after the Stratus merger. They could not be more bullish on ASND. Its the only premier pure play in the Carrier and ISP market with great data products which will start merging all voice capabilities. Lucent has Cisco breathing down its neck so it has to turn the tables soon.

Do you have access to a fax ? Maybe its time for a Bay area ASNDers meeting.

<<There is another large factor that affects Lucent's acquisition strategy, however: The company can develop data-networking technologies in-house through its vaunted Bell Labs division, allowing it to pass up another company's technology that might be ready to market but not meet Lucent's rigorous standards. As one Lucent executive put it recently, "When you own Bell Labs,it is hard to say you couldn't invent it yourself if you needed it."

If they are so freaking great why buy Livingston for 650 mill? They bought them for the PM4 when was it Oct/Nov/Dec 97? And all this wonderful resource in New England can't get it ready for nearly a year. This another remark I'll shovel on my roses and get great results.
