SYSTEM

Residential Service Begins in Florida Cities This Week

Lisle, Ill. - Tellabs announced today that MediaOne, the nation's third
largest broadband services provider is the first in the nation to use
the Tellabs CABLESPAN 2300 universal telephony distribution system for
large-scale single-family residential telephony service over its hybrid
fiber/coax network.

MediaOne began commercial delivery of integrated telephone and cable TV
services August 17, in Lighthouse Point, Fla., and deployment began
yesterday in Jacksonville, Fla. Lighthouse Point, in the Pompano Beach
area, and Jacksonville are two of MediaOne's largest properties with a
combined 520,000 cable subscribers. MediaOne plans to use the CABLESPAN
system to offer telephone services in 1998 in other MediaOne service
areas.

Tellabs is providing MediaOne with a complete solution for the delivery
of comprehensive, cost-effective services that includes the CABLESPAN
host digital terminal, remote service units and element management
system, as well as various Tellabs Selectsm professional services.

"This is precisely why we selected Tellabs for these important markets
in Florida," said Gary Lane, vice president-telephone services for
MediaOne's National Markets Group. "In addition to the telephony
services beginning this week, the CABLESPAN platform provides us with
the future capability to provide our customers high-speed access to
on-line data services, such as Internet access and corporate LAN
extension."

providers," said Tim Fritzley, vice president of Tellabs' Broadband

combination of products and services for the provision of
telecommunication services over HFC networks in the United States and
elsewhere."

To date, Tellabs has delivered more than 25,000 CABLESPAN remote service
units for HFC applications to customers worldwide. The CABLESPAN system
is ideally suited for the deployment of telephone and data services to
residential and small-business customers. The system includes a
comprehensive family of remote service units that can cost-effectively
deliver a wide variety of voice and data services, including access to
the Internet and other on-line services, over a variety of transport
media. The system can be readily deployed in single-family residence and
shared tenant/multiple dwelling unit applications.
