Newsweek, in its August 24 issue, says that YBM is the most exotic tale from a year in which "accounting irregularities" have become all too regular. The YBM problem, first exposed by Vancouver investigator Adrian du Plessis, has been added to by accounting scandals at Sunbeam, Cendant and now Livent. Unnamed experts who talked to reporter Daniel McGinn say that the blizzard of funny numbers is largely a phenomenon of an aging bull market: to keep shares and the value of options rising, and to meet analysts' expectations, some firms are tempted to fudge figures. This makes it a golden age for the self-styled scam spotters who pride themselves on identifying tomorrow's scandals today. Mr. du Plessis dominates this area in Canada, while the US market is ruled by Howard Schilit, a former accounting professor who called attention to Sunbeam and Cendant before their problems came to light.
