RESEARCH ALERT-Intel 1998, 1998 EPS upped

SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Piper Jaffray analyst Ashok Kumar said he raised his rating on Intel Corp to a strong buy and raised his 1998 and 1999 earnings estimates on the chip giant, saying the outlook for the company is the strongest in several quarters.
Kumar said he raised his 1998 estimates to $3.13 a share from $3.07 previously and 1999 estimates to $3.81 from $3.58 a share, respectively. He also said his new 12-month price target for Intel is $105, or 27 times 1999 earnings estimates.

''We expect units to be up 11 percent sequentially...stable ASPs (average selling prices) to drive Q3 revenues up eight percent sequentially,'' Kumar said in a note.

''The outlook for the company is the strongest it has been in the last few quarters,'' Kumar said.

Kumar also pointed out that the reception for Intel's upcoming new Celeron chip, code-named Mendocino, is very strong among PC makers. The chip, which will be launched on Monday, will displace Advance Micro Devices Inc's (AMD - news) K62 chip in the sub-$900 and sub-$1,200 PC market, Kumar predicted.

Intel's shares were off 2-1/8 to 83-7/8.
