EchoStar to Provide Satellite Distribution for EMNetwork, the First Truly Interactive Broadcast Network
EMNetwork to Bring Compelling Interactive Experience to Echostar's Subscribers Using Scheduled Broadcast Model
SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 19, 1998-- EnterMedia Network Company, parent company of EMNetwork, and EchoStar Communications Corporation (NASDAQ: DISH - news, DISHP - news) announced today that together they will distribute EMNetwork, the premier network that will offer scheduled interactive broadcast programming via satellite.

EchoStar's broadband subscribers will experience the full potential of EMNetwork's interactive programming. EchoStar's high-speed satellite broadcast will provide subscribers with higher quality video, audio and multi-media than that offered in wire-based technology. By converging TV and the Internet, EMNetwork offers a new medium for producers, broadcasters and viewers to create interactive content for nationwide broadband delivery, allowing subscribers to interact with programming and with other viewers at the same time via personal computers.

''EMNetwork is part of our continuing efforts to bring an enhanced broadcast experience to our subscribers,'' said Mark Jackson, senior vice president of Satellite Services at EchoStar.

Jackson continued, ''EchoStar is proud to be the first satellite distributor to provide interactive broadcast services. Our technology provides high-speed broadband delivery to PCs that will enable our subscribers to experience quality audio and full-motion video. EMNetwork demonstrates a new paradigm in broadcasting.''

EMNetwork is an interactive broadcasting network transmitted over Internet, satellite and cable that was launched on June 17, 1998, with a variety of interactive programs. EMNetwork provides a venue for content producers who want to explore a new production and revenue model for new forms of visual and audio programming. EMNetwork programming permits the viewers to interact with programming on a scheduled basis with other viewers so that they never experience the same program twice -- even with multiple viewings. All EMNetwork shows offer a fully integrated interactive experience including quality audio and full motion video, visually compelling animations, chat communications, real-time viewer polls, text with graphics and full interstitial advertisements.

EMNetwork, along with future channels of the EchoStar service, will be priced individually, allowing customers to customize their services. EchoStar will offer subscribers a unique platform using PCs with a small dish antenna and plans for a special set-top receiver for television.

EMNetwork's viewership has been steadily growing since its launch. The agreement with EchoStar further expands EMNetwork into a new medium and introduces it to over 1.4 million potential subscribers. EMNetwork will expand its content to include business, games, sports, news and information programs beginning in the fourth quarter of 1998.

''EchoStar's agreement to distribute EMNetwork via satellite will offer content producers another nationwide venue for delivering compelling interactive entertainment and information,'' said Russ Lujan, executive vice president of EnterMedia Network Company. ''With its pioneering show formats, EMNetwork is finally delivering the promise of interactive broadcasting by providing a forum for content producers and their audiences the opportunity to interact together. This multi-year agreement with EchoStar creates the ideal crossover model from net programming to true interactive broadcasting in the living room by delivering EMNetwork via satellite,'' Lujan continued.

Founded in 1997, EnterMedia is an interactive broadcasting company that serves the emerging convergence of television and the Internet. The company provides a new model of broadcast services that enables content producers, broadcasters and TV networks generate and distribute interactive broadcast programming supported by advertising and business services.
