Oh, so you want me to spin you a vast right-wing conspiracy. Happy to do it: David Sentelle, certifiable Helms crony, is chief of the panel appointing the independent counsel. He is a North Carolinian, long-time friend of Helms, who was basically named him to the seat by Helms as a matter of senatorial privilege. I know of no Clinton appointees on the panel. In fact if I recall correctly, both of the other two are senior, retired judges who were appointed long ago. I can track this down if you really push me. Sentelle's wife works for Lauch Faircloth, another NC senator, who was chief instigator of the Senate hearings on Whitewater. Sentelle, Helms and Faircloth were seen having the lunch the very day before Robert Fiske was FIRED as the Whitewater independent counsel and replaced by Ken Starr. Recall that conservatives were unhappy with Fiske for finding the Vince Foster did in fact commit suicide. All three denied discussing matters relating to the Independent Counsel. Yeah right. By SHEER COINCIDENCE <GGG>, Sentelle was on BOTH panels of judges that reversed the convictions of Ollie North and John Poindexter. As the NY Times reported, ". . . Judges Laurence H. Silberman and David B. Sentelle, two of the most conservative Reagan appointees of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia . . . overturned the conviction of North." (Sentelle and Douglas Ginsburg were on the Poindexter panel). So I am right on both counts. Next time before you spout off, maybe YOU should check your facts.
