Actually, penni, Gibbon said exactly what you're trying to paraphrase. Personally, I can't believe that Gibbon's thesis can hold: Christians have over the ages shown themselves as willing to kill their neighbours in war as any other religion.

Thank you for sharing this I am sure it had a part in the whole mess. The conspiracy and struggling for power sounds like a pretty immoral society that was in desperate shape. I really think we can learn from history but how can we get people to pay attention?
