The sector is under some pressure and the charts for the ISDEX and other inet sector indexes look fairly weak. On the plus side, I think that Lycos is one of the best "stories" in the sector. They are growing more rapidly than any other portal or commerce site in the top 20 that I know of. More than that, they have pioneered or assembled a lot of the "sticky" web authoring and community programs that every large web site is now trying to copy. They have the most aggressive and well thought-out and leveraged game plans there is - far better than some of the much higher priced 'darlings' of the net that get most of the free press. They could do more to present a unified image - something they said they have been working on aggressively and will roll out starting in about three weeks. Their branding strategy is to mostly rely on the "Word Of the Web or WOW" techniques (copyright YourNet Share) rather than the old-think, mass advertising, heavy-branding approach used by media-mad sites like Amazongonenuts.com. After hearing their cc, it makes me want to revise my inet business plan and pitch it to Bob Davis to join them! These guys have a kick-butt attitude!
