Although I wasn't as involved with the market as I am today, I think the difference between 1987 and 1998 is that most people are looking for signs of a collapse here. The bulls are cautiosly optmistic and the bears are downright pessimistic. In 1987, the crash came as a surprise to most people, but lately all the financial magazines are discussing the possibility of a downturn. Not to say that it won't or can't happen, but I don't think that many people will be truly surprised if it does correct significantly.
