Lucent sees flat FY98 Asia revenue growth [Hmmm... I know one company that is doing well in Japan, Taiwan and China...] Wednesday August 19, 11:50 pm Eastern Time SINGAPORE, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Lucent Technologies Inc sees flat revenues from the Asia Pacific in its fiscal year ending September 30, 1998, its regional president and chief executive officer said on Thursday. Michael Butcher, Lucent's chief executive officer for Asia Pacific, told a news conference: ''For 1998/99, we are planning for over 20 percent growth (in revenue).''He said growth in fiscal year 1999 would come from snatching market share from its competitors such as Swedish telecoms group LM Ericsson (LMEb.ST), Germany's Siemens AG (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: SIEG.F) and U.S. internet networking group Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO - news). [Now how are they going to do that?] ''In the next six weeks, we will be making announcements of major contracts in the region, (spreading) over the whole spectrum of our technologies,'' Butcher said. He declined to elaborate. Butcher said for the current fiscal year, Lucent, like most companies, was suffering from Asia's economic downturn. But it did not expect a decline in revenue. In fiscal year 1997, Lucent recorded global revenue of US$26.4 billion, with the Asia Pacific region accounting for more than 10 percent, Butcher said.
