True. They don't have to.

"They will certainly have a go on it when (if) they release their "consumer device" next year, but the chances of many wild hits in a row are slim."

No "wild hits" perhaps, but a family of iMac products including a business model with a 17 in monitor, a replacement for the eMate, and a hand held device are all probably in the cards for early '99. So too, a refreshed Pro line.

Lots of interesting products in the pipeline. All are likely to be profitable to Apple. None are likely to top the iMac in initial success of course, but Apple's next big push has to be to the business community where iMac-type frenzy just doesn't happen.
