Just imagine the following dialog, circa 1750:

Augustine Washington: "George, my son, did you chop down the cherry tree?"

George (wagging his finger): "Now listen to me. I'm going to say this again: I... did... not... chop... down... that... plant.... cherry tree."

Later, after George's DNA was found on the axe handle, George makes a statement to the public:

George: "It's just as I said. The axe chopped down the tree, and that is legally accurate. Now stop looking into my private life. It's time we put all this behind us and move on."
