Actualy, I think it's harder to raise a sales tax than to raise the income tax rate. The income tax is somewhat hidden, since it's taken from your check before you ever see it. If people actually had to write a check to the IRS for the full amount of the taxes, they would be marching on D.C. with guns blazing. With a sales tax, you see the effect every time you buy something. Look at how difficult it is right now for states to raise the sales tax rates - people fight back hard.

Bill I guess I didn't make myself clear.I mean how much money do you have in the bank,market,whatever now?If we switch to a sales tax all of your prior savings would be taxed twice.Once as an income tax[before the sales tax was put in place] then as a sales tax when it is spent[after the income tax was replaced].But as j-b pointed out this could be worked on.As far as Congress and greed,perhaps the law could be structured so that congress would need a 2/3 vote to raise,
