Pretty simple really. The geologist walks about the property, picture a guy with a little hammer, ( I mean one that he bangs on a rock, er-ah, I mean one that won't bruise if its struck against a rock) chipping away at endless pieces of magma/volcanics breccia/porphry etc. etc. Suddenly he spies a shiny piece that intrigues him. Dazzled by his good fortune he decides to "grab" about 5 lbs of the stuff to see if it is what he thinks it is!! Begads, Voila! It is, its "Gold".

To which I respond, why would a smart geologist grab "DIRT"? So he can say "egads Watson, it truly is what we expected....dirt, and not only that we paid to have it assayed and it confirmed our suspicion....its DIRT"!!

There are many ways to sample;
"bulk" -take tonnes of material and send it off for assay/screening. ie. diamondiferous kimberlite pipes are sampled this way to determine economics.
"trench"- which gives a greater depth than grab and a larger cross section. It is also a tonnage sample.
"grab"- which we already discussed.
"reverse circulation"- which does not produce a core, but a wash of crushed core content by injecting water( like drilling for oil, you don't want to be pulling out a huge core, when your objective is the "black tea"). This would not be used for copper/gold porphry systems.

But all the above are subject to "contamination from surface". That is to say, if the deposit is placer, the placer will pool in some places and not in others. Needless to say, geologist know where things tend to "pool"

The only sample technique that can't be geographically/topographically fudged (unless your parttime sport, is heaving yourself out of helicopters) is drilling. There are two drill bit sizes (probably more, but I only have heard reference to two) HQ and NQ the difference between these is the size of the drill, therefore the diameter size of the sample, NQ is the smaller of the two, about 2 inches if I remember correctly.

Certicom came thru for me again today...love that stock..daytrade it all thetime....later

Mainly, sample types are inclusive of chip, grab, channel and trench. GG
