For the most part "average" wage earners have become a "net check" group. It's when individuals start going up on the income scale and they see that huge amount taken off of their gross earnings that it starts to hit home. They then realize that their tax rates have increased, while one by one, deductions have been reduced or eliminated. Those are the folks that will hit the polls with a vengeance this fall. Republicans (if they are smart) should start pushing for real tax relief, asap. bp

I personally think that a flat tax as proposed by Steve Forbes and others is the least objectionable alternative and a great improvement over the current monstrosity, but I understand why that option is not attractive to you (:>)).
