I agree with your reasoning. The choices of Democrats with the sterling reputation (across party lines) that would be required are indeed few, but I could think of Sam Nunn or perhaps Bill Bradley or Pat Moynihan.

Does anyone remember whether an appointed VP has to be approved by Congress? I vaguely remember that Gerald Ford had to be confirmed.
