fiberman,

I have read the release:

biz.yahoo.com

and, from what I know, believe it. Braun has spoken to many of her desire to exit the business over the past several months and Masengill and she has worked closely together with an apparent fluid partnership. I think it will be a smooth transition.

Best,
Stitch

Sorry, it has taken so long to respond to announced resignation of Kathy Braun --- I have been busy. But the resignation is HORRIBLE news for long term holders of WDC. I wrote this earlier this year about her; it was true then and its true now.

WDC is a premier disk drive maker, with mfg facilities in Singapore, its home ofc in Irvine, CA, and research and development in both sites. This co. is a survivor, 1st surviving the disk controller obselesence in the early 1990s, and the consolidation of its industry in the mid 1990s. Its the baby of some SoCalers who worked in the defense industry and knew they could do it better. This spirit has stuck in the corporate culture, and is now showing up in the 2nd generation of mgmt. Kathryn Braun, SR VP, is the daughter of the founder; she has a never-say-die spirit which is great when things look bleak -- just like right now.
When they hired Haggerty as CEO he bought a visionary cheapstake philosophy of letting the suppliers 1) do the research and 2) help WDC design the new products. IMHO, WDC will be well managed, survive and remain profitable most of the time.

It appears the spirit of Kathy Braun is gone. The question is who will fill the big mama gap at WDC. Not everyone is disposed by temperment to tell others to "keep your heads up". Not everyone is with this disposition is positioned high enough in the organization to be taken seriously. With her resignation, I must reconsider my opinion of WDC.
