GTE nabs mega telecom deal to outfit Pentagon <<Can someone with a wild imagination see WSTL in the Pentagon?>> AUGUST 19, 1998 . . . 17:55 EDT GTE nabs mega telecom deal to outfit Pentagon BY BOB BREWIN (antenna@fcw.com) GTE Government Systems today won a $109 million contract to totally revamp the telecommunications system at the Pentagon to provide top Defense Department officials with advanced, wide-band multimedia technology to manage forces deployed worldwide. The contract represents the first time since the famed five-sided building opened in 1943 that DOD has awarded a contract to completely overhaul the telecommunications systems at the Pentagon, the nerve center for globally deployed U.S. forces. For decades the Pentagon has adopted new telecommunications technologies by installing networks on a piecemeal basis. The 10-year Pentagon Information Management and Telecommunications Renovation contract will provide the 20,000 users in the building with an integrated, state-of-the-art telecommunications network designed to handle broadband, multimedia traffic as well as plain-vanilla telephone service. GTE will install a single, common-user wiring system that is designed to accommodate access and growth for all users in the building well into the 21st century. The contract also calls for GTE to set up a single Network and Systems Management Center, a single Technical Control Facility for the monitoring, control and restoration of critical command and control circuits, and a voice switching center for users of secure ''red'' telephones. A GTE spokesman said the company was ''thrilled to be selected to undertake this important work for the Department of Defense. We plan to make this the model for large-scale systems of the future.'' Boeing Information Services teamed with Bell Atlantic, Lucent Technologies and Harris Corp. also bid on the contract. If the planned GTE merger with Bell Atlantic is approved, Bell Atlantic will emerge as a partial winner for the Pentagon renovation contract.
