Tim, there was an especially frightening article in the NY Times magazine section several years ago detailing the establishment of these bomb factories and terrorist camps in Afghanistan. Money that the Reagan Administration spent to support the Mujahadim insurrection was being used by these same anti-Soviet rebels to train an anti-US and anti-western terrorist network. I wish I still had the article around, because it was truly frightening. We are not talking here about a weak government that cannot control its borders. We are talking about a virulent fundamentalist-Islamic government bent on exacting some kind of revenge on the West.

T.L. and others who responded to my comment about the bombing:
I was questioning the TIMING OF THE BOMBING/ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE STRIKE only...not the actual act (who am I to question that?!)...the point (made half in jest mind you) was that the announcement came at a point yesterday when the leaks from the lewinsky trial were just trickling into the news...

...fyi, as you probably heard, the strike was planned A WEEK AGO but the timing of the announcement was interesting at the very least...

...I make no political judgements here (or anywhere, as it is not my interest or expertise), just a curious observation...you know ala "wag the dog."...

...I was mostly disturbed that the timing of the announcement interupted a nice attempt at a rally for the stock market.

cheers, GR
